Can you BELIEVE it has been FIVE whole years since my mastectomy? I sure cannot! I will be hula hooping for FIVE whole hours to celebrate :D
.
I lost my b00bies 5 years ago, but I have gained SO much in the process. I felt so alone through my experiences but found solace in the amazing online community. This ultimately inspired me to set up BRCA+ Chat a national UK charity.
.
I always said if I helped just one person, I would be happy, and I am thrilled to see BRCA+ Chat helping hundreds of people on a monthly basis.

It's Grief Awareness Week and we wanted to re share a blog which talks about the loss of a parent but also the gift of knowledge that it brought.
.
"Before my Mum died, they found that she was a BRCA 2 alteration carrier. My Mum is of Ashkenazi (eastern European) Jewish heritage, and sadly the prevalence of BRCA alterations is higher in this population. In 2015, I was also tested and told I am a BRCA 2 alteration carrier.
I am beyond grateful to live my life with this knowledge, at the age that I am, and I only wish this had been the case for my Mum all those years ago. Knowledge is power, and it’s this sentiment that I think of when trying to reconcile the cards our family have been dealt."

PALB2, preventative mastectomy. OTM teardrop implants (510cc). Nipple sparing.

"I decided to go down the double mastectomy and direct to implant route as I didn’t want to have a more complex surgery than a mastectomy was, and the recovery time was quicker which allowed me to get back to work sooner as I’m self employed.
I’m learning to love my new foobs, and whilst it’s a tough lesson to learn to love yourself all over again, it’s opened up so many new things and many laughs along the way. The foobs are still a novelty and cause much discussion in the pub!"

Our bros with BRCA have a higher risk of developing breast cancer than the rest of the population.

BRCA2 has a higher risk than BRCA1 - whilst they are still relatively low risks, it is important for EVERYONE to know their normal, and check for any changes.

Wake up, smell the coffee, and check your pecs.

Mastectomy Monday

Anon. Preventative mastectomy, DIEP. Age 38. BRCA1.
.
Image taken 10 months post-op.
.
On the wait list for some tweaks and filling along with a discussion around nipples. (recon/tats).
.
"I chose to have DIEP reconstruction as part of my preventative mastectomy due being a BRCA1 gene mutation carrier.
I wanted to use my own tissue rather than have an implant or go flat and I am really pleased with the results.
I will undergo a phase 2 surgery for a few tweaks and nipple construction next year.
It has been a long journey but knowing how much my breast cancer risk is now reduced it’s totally worth it."
