Mental Health

We are aware that testing, being diagnosed (with a mutation or cancer), seeing family diagnosed, deciding what to do, ALL THESE THINGS can have an impact on individuals’ mental health.

We are building a community of BRCA+ Buddies across the UK – so mutants can support each other, and have someone to chat to.

We advise CHATTING (obvs), and don’t be afraid to reach out to an expert – Click here for support services.

Feel the emotions!

It is really important that you are able to feel and express your feelings (in a safe way).

Remember, it is normal to have ups and downs. According to Kubler-Ross there are 5 stages of grief:

  • Denial
  • Anger
  • Bargaining
  • Depression
  • Acceptance

We need different things during different stages of grief (Information, communication, emotional support, guidance and direction).

Remember – you are not alone!

Self-Care

Here at BRCA Chat, we recommend taking time for your self-care. Self care comes in many shapes and sizes, below are a few ideas:

  • Walk a local trail
  • Find a new playlist
  • Get your groove on
  • Find some space and do some yoga
  • Have a bubble bath
  • Read a book
  • Watch a funny video
  • Write or doodle in a journal
  • Declutter your home
  • Meditate
  • Write a list of things you are grateful for
  • Eat outside in the sunshine (if there is any)
  • Change your bed sheets

Grief & BRCA

One of the hardest things about having BRCA+ in the family is the grief from losing loved ones to cancer.

It is important to have a strong support network around you, whether that’s friends, family, or us!

Below are some links to blogs written by our very own BRCA+ Chat members, sharing their personal journeys with grief.
