Mastectomy Monday...

The size and shape of our pre-mastectomy bodies can sometimes impact our surgical options, and how many operations it may take to achieve the desired outcome.

Today we are using the example of our co-founder Lisa's choices, to see how having large breasts shaped her journey.

- Surgery 1 (Reduction/uplift/nipple sparing)

(Mastectomy with implant reconstruction)

- Surgery 3
(Implant exchange)

It's important to remember that we are all different and you will only know what will work best for you and your body by speaking to your medical team.

Who are BRCA+ Chat?

We've had a lot of new followers lately, yay! So we thought it would be good to reintroduce ourselves.

BRCA+ Chat was formed in 2021 by the very wonderful Christen & Lisa. Both were on their own BRCA+ journey and wanted to help others to not feel alone.

We support anyone who carries a genetic alteration which predisposes them to cancer, such as BRCA.

Our website, brcachat.com contains lots of information to help you, and our online talks, peer support groups and in person socials are all fantastics ways to get involved and meet people who understand.

What a session we had on Wednesday night. Thank you to everyone who attended.

We got to meet 'Verity the Velvet Vulva' and learnt so much about our bodies. It certainly highlighted how little we understand our lady bits (and the lack of teaching in our younger years!)

To ensure everyones privacy, we didn't record the session but look out for some fab resources coming soon 👀

How implants change over time...

Anon, BRCA1, aged 40. Preventative Mastectomy with immediate implant reconstruction, under the muscle. (round implants, 375cc). Nipples removed.

“BRCA has taken so much. Lots of family members, my boobs and even my baby making bits but it’s also been a gift. It’s brought some amazing people into my life and I really don’t know how I’d have got through it without them”.

As you can see, reconstructions soften over time. The images at 4 weeks look incredible but it's important to remember that while they may look healed on the outside, there is still a lot of swelling and healing to be done internally.

Be patient with your recovery. Don't be in a rush to return to 'normal'. Time and rest are the best healers.
