Aesthetic Flat Closure
Age: 26
Surgery details: Flast closure as part of treatment for TNBC.
“After 6 months of intense chemotherapy for breast cancer treatment, I was well and truly fed up with my boobs. I chose aesthetic flat closure (AFC) as it had the shortest recovery time and lowest chance of post surgery complications. I’m lucky that for me, I didn’t really care about my boobs and I was already considering a preventative AFC mastectomy before I was diagnosed with cancer. I like the feel of my nice flat chest, and that I have the option to wear prostheses if I fancy it – just like how I use makeup! I’m so glad I had the confidence to make this decision, despite several people trying to persuade me to try implants first (partly due to my age I think). There has not been a single moment I’ve regretted it. I feel so free.
My advice for anyone considering AFC is make sure you have an in depth chat with your surgeon about how you would like it to look, just because you’re choosing AFC, does not mean you don’t care what it looks like! For me, this meant I needed to ask for an extra appointment as the surgeon barely mentioned AFC as an option in the first appointment! I suggest joining the Flat Friends surgery Facebook group to help you with your decision. There are so many kind, knowledgeable and helpful people on there. I looked at loads of pictures to help me get used to how my outcome may look. I also asked to see photos of the AFC’s my surgeon had performed, as the results I saw online varied tremendously.“
