BRCA1 Gene Alteration

Age: 26

Surgery details: Preventative double mastectomy, nipple sparing, with permanent expanders placed over the muscle.

“I’m Thara and I’m 26. in September 2023 I had my preventative mastectomy after two years of being on the waiting list. I’m BRCA1+ and found out at the age of 21, and always knew that this would be the path I’d want to take.

 

I ended up having permanent expanders, and I’ve had three small inflations to get to my desired size.

 

Having said that, the journey was emotional and psychologically difficult, but I’m so glad I underwent the surgery.

 

I’m now six months out and feel like a huge weight has been lifted.”
