Rosie has been practising yoga since she was a child and works a lot with people who are living with conditions such as cancer and chronic fatigue. Her passion led her to create her business, Do Your OM Thing Yoga.

Today she shares her blog with us and explains how those of us with a gene alteration can use the practise as part of a support package to boost our physical and emotional wellbeing.

What’s going OM?

“You have your Mum’s eyes.”

“You’re good at that, just like your dad.”

It can feel lovely to think of the characteristics we share with relatives. We might even consciously or subconsciously be more like that person because we want to take after them. We receive our genetic code from our parents, and that can include BRCA+ genes. You’ll remember how it felt to receive that information, and the decisions and journey ahead of you. Perhaps you can pause reading this to place a hand on your heart or on your other hand to reflect on your strength to get to this point.

Yoga & BRCA+ Chat

Genes are inherited and it can feel like you’re not in control, which is a frightening place to be. BRCA+ Chat have turned the positive of a diagnosis into… an enormous positive with their supportive community and events. The online yoga and meditation sessions are fast becoming an integral part of the support package. But why, what’s going OM?

  • Reduced inflammation: which has a universally positive effect on your whole body. You put yourself in an optimal condition to make decisions, prepare for surgery or other treatments.

  • Stress reduction: Learn and love the techniques that reduce stress, which supports recovery and pain management. You’ll feel really good on the day, and again and again each time you use them.

  • Boosted immune system: The movements we practice promote lymphatic drainage, again great pre and post-surgery as well as for a robust immune system.

 Yoga really is for you

I’ve taught yoga for almost a decade, and it always humbles me that people are courageous enough to try yoga. I knowwww what images are out there and… they’d put me off! I want you to know that the majority of people take to the mat because of an injury, illness, diagnosis, or grief. This tells us that yoga really is for you, especially if you’re feeling tender or fragile. Or; if you’re feeling supercharged and boundless energy for advocacy.

I invite you to release what you think yoga is or should be and think of it as the best fitting pair of trousers; always comfortable, gives you a lift, fits you perfectly each and every day and a way to you express yourself.

Love,

Rosie
